Tomb of King Thibow of Burma:
It is one of the most important cemeteries in Murshidabad. Entering through the main gate of Central Sericulture on the right side of National Highway 34 near Chuapur in Bahrampur, at the very western end is the tomb of King Thibow of Burma.
Fell into a forested state of neglect for a long time. This traditional antiquity was recently preserved in 2001 under Section 2 of the West Bengal Heritage Commission Act. And has been declared as a traditional antiquity.Thibow was the king of Burma. He is an independent man in all respects. Thibaw re-established French-Burmese relations to keep the British under pressure. And for this the English authorities were dissatisfied with Thibow.
Finally, Lord Dufferin, the then Governor of India, declared war on the Burmese government. In 1885, the Third Anglo-Burmese War was defeated. And in January 1886, Thebok and his family were deported to India.The then British government brought the defeated Thibow to India and imprisoned him in the old building of the present District Council at Panchanantala, Bahrampur.
The house was named Burma Cottage because of the capture of Thibow . Bahrampur died in exile. And today the tombs of King Thibaut and his family within the Central Sericulture still stand as silent witnesses in history.The tomb area is surrounded by a wall after the declaration of heritage. There are a total of 12 graves of the family here. Each tomb has been newly renovated.
However, as there is no identification plate on the tombs, it is not known whose tomb it is.There are two large mausoleums in addition to these. These two mausoleums are believed to be the king and queen. The two mausoleums will be 10 to 12 feet high.There are also two square tombs about four feet high. There are coffin-shaped tombs three to two feet high and four adjacent to the ground.And there are a total of 12 tombs here. Many people do not know about this very valuable cemetery of Murshidabad. If there is publicity, the tomb of the king can become a place of interest for tourists.
Tombs of Christians in Madhupur(Murshidabad, west Bengal):
There are Christian cemeteries on several acres of land surrounded by a high wall adjacent to the west wall of Madhupur and the east wall of the Bahrampur Agricultural Research Farm.It can be understood from the name plate on the entrance. People from the surrounding Christian community were still buried here.Yet on special Christian days relatives come and light candles on the tomb. The whole cemetery was illuminated. The oldest tomb in the field is the Reverend Basant. He was buried on 26/02/1827.
Here is the tomb of renowned headmaster of Krishnanath College School Joseph Arunalantham (1945) and his wife Priya Bala (1923) .Most of the old tombs here do not have director plaques. Ancient English cemetery at Berhampore(Babulbona English Residency Cemetery) :
This large ancient cemetery of the English in the town of Berhampore is located a little east of the bus stand, south of National Highway 34, Babulbona Road, and north of State Sericulture.It is an ancient tomb that is still present.The tomb fell into a long forested open field and was set to be destroyed by extreme negligence. After the cemetery was later declared as a West Bengal Heritage Site, the cemetery is surrounded by a wall for preservation.
And the cemetery is regularly maintained even if not preserved.There are still tombs of some famous Englishmen of the last half of the 18th century and the first half of the nineteenth century.The tomb of Mr. Nilkar, one of the discoverers of the ruins of Gaur, is here. His workplace was Malda. The oldest tomb in the field is that of Captain James Spinner. He died in 1733 and was buried here.
The tomb of survey expert Capt. Robart Boylion is also here. He was the representative of the Nawab of Murshidabad. Here is the grave of an adventurous man named George Thomas. He was the chief commander of the state of Haryana. He died in 1802 and was buried here. The English cemeteries are diverse. Most of the tombs here are built in the British style.There are some tombs level with the ground but the tombs are covered with white marble stones. The tombs were plated with brass plates. They have been stolen.Not only this, name plates have been stolen from all the tombs here for which no one can be identified.
12 bigha cemetery at Berhampore:
There is another ancient tomb at Berhampore, two kilometers from Babulbona Cemetery, on the east side of the present Bharat Sanchar Nigam Road, next to Station Road, adjacent to Gorabazar.This cemetery is specially known as 12 Bigha Cemetery. This large cemetery, surrounded by a few acres of land, is now abandoned.The surrounding brick walls are somehow standing in a state of disrepair. There is no environment to enter this forested tomb. It is known that British soldiers were buried here after the battle of Palashi. Later there are tombs of some Christian people living in Bahrampur.The cemetery gradually became deforested and unusable due to long-term neglect, for which the cemetery is no longer used. Apart from two or three tombs, no other tombs can be seen here. Everything is covered in the forest. There are no identification plates on the tombs that can be seen. However, it is known that there is no tomb of any significant person here for which perhaps the tomb of this wall bears the memory of the war.
